Microsoft Above and Beyond Awards

Microsoft Corp., in collaboration with the United Service Organizations (USO), is proud to announce the winners of the Microsoft Above and Beyond Awards. The awards recognize the contributions of citizens across the country who brighten the lives of U.S. troops throughout the world.

"These winners are remarkable examples of how everyday people can do extraordinary things," said Curt Kolcun, Vice President of Microsoft Federal.

"Their actions showcase the best of American citizenship, selflessness, and support for our service members and their families - they are true testaments of how to salute our troops."

Chosen through a public online vote, the following winners will be honored for their service in these categories:

Effort Award: Patti Patton-Bader, Pasadena, Calif. Soon after Patton-Bader began sending care packages to her son in Iraq, she started a group of volunteers to "adopt" soldiers. Since then, the group's 100,000 members have sent tens of thousands of care packages and hundreds of thousands of letters to make sure no soldier is forgotten while serving. Its motto: "May no soldier go unloved."

Medical Attention Award: Walter Fricke, St. Louis Park, Minn. Fricke, a helicopter pilot wounded in the Vietnam War, knows firsthand that family can be the key to a soldier's recovery. One year ago, Walt founded The Veterans Airlift Command, not only volunteering his own aircraft and fuel, but creating a national network of over 500 volunteer aircraft owners and pilots who have joined in the effort to reunite wounded service members with families. The group has already flown over 180,000 miles to help bring wounded troops back together with their loved ones.

USO Promotion and Success Award: Paulette Nelson, Savannah, GA. Before her son's best friend's father was deployed to Iraq, Paulette didn't even know what deployment meant. But after noticing the tearful goodbyes, Paulette decided she wanted to help make a difference. Now she operates the Savannah airport's USO station, and from Hunter Army Airfield she makes sure every soldier gets a warm welcome, and a warm send off, even lending her cell phone so they can make that one last phone call home.

Everyday Difference Award: Todd Schmidt, Burke, Va. While on patrol in Afghanistan, Maj. Schmidt came up with an idea to provide school supplies for local kids. Thanks to him, donors and volunteers have sent hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of textbooks, school supplies and secondhand clothes to Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo. Under Schmidt's leadership, Operation Dreamseed has even helped build a school outside Kandahar City by raising more than $80,000 for the cause.

Youth Leadership Award: Brittany and Robbie Bergquist, Norwell, Mass. Just 13 and 12 years old, these siblings heard about a soldier who had run up an $8,000 phone bill calling home. With two cousins deployed overseas, Brittany and Robbie know how important phone calls could be, so they committed themselves to helping soldiers call home. To date, they have raised nearly $1 million and donated over 450,000 phone cards, equaling 2.5 million minutes of talk time

After announcing the awards in mid-September, Microsoft and the USO received hundreds of nominations, narrowed down the list to finalists in each of the five categories, and facilitated a public online vote to choose the winners.

The awards will be presented on Veterans Day (observed), Nov. 12 at a ceremony in New York City's Rainbow Room.

"We knew we were on to something special when we first discussed with Microsoft how we could honor those who serve our troops," said Elaine Rogers, President, USO of Metropolitan Washington. "Now, seeing how these winners embody the principles of service and community should inspire each of us towards greater contribution."

Kolcun added, "All of our nominees, finalists, and many others out there who support our troops everyday should all be commended for their great work to support our services members and their families. We hope this handful of wonderful examples helps further everyone's efforts and inspires others to get involved."

Valour-IT Begins 3rd Online Fundraising Competition

Project Works to Provide Voice-controlled Laptops for Wounded Warriors

(Pasadena, CA) October 29, 2007– In recognition of the continuing need to supply voice-activated and adapted-technology laptops to severely wounded military personnel; Project Valour-IT is mounting its 3rd annual Veterans Day fundraising drive among military and civilian bloggers. Teams of bloggers with thousands of readers are aligning themselves with their chosen service branch—Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, or Navy/Coast Guard—in a friendly competition to raise $240,000 before Veterans Day.

Well-known bloggers who have participated in the past include Michelle Malkin, Glenn Reynolds, Hugh Hewitt, Powerline, and NZ Bear. The blogger team leaders this year are Mudville Gazette, Blackfive, Soldiers’ Angel Holly Aho, and Chaotic Synaptic Activity.

Wounded soldier Chuck Ziegenfuss’ description of using a voice-controlled laptop during his recovery illustrates Valour-IT’s power:

It was the first time I felt whole since I’d woken up wounded in Landstuhl.

Valour-IT is beyond simple “support.” Access to laptops enables severely wounded war fighters to correspond with family and brothers in arms, connect with the world, and function as independent and effective members of society. Receiving a Valour-IT laptop is not simply a short-term emotional boost gleaned from the knowledge one is "remembered." It is assistance in reclaiming a bit of wholeness and independence in the face of life-altering injuries, repeated surgery, painful physical therapy, and the isolation of the hospital room. Each laptop reconnects a soldier and reestablishes personal dignity.

The competition will run from October 29 through Veterans Day, November 11. Anyone can donate or join the fundraising drive at the Valour-IT Homepage.

Operation: Give Music to a Soldier's Ears

September 24, 2007
For Immediate Release:

Oak Park, California 8th Grade Student launches: “Operation: Give Music to a Soldier’s Ears”

Kelsey Paule, an 8th grade student at Medea Creek Middle School in Oak Park, California has launched a drive to collect Apple iPods and iTunes Gift Cards for wounded soldiers and others deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Kelsey with assistance from her father, Mike Paule (a Council Member on the Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council) have teamed up with Soldiers’ Angels (A Pasadena, CA-based organization) to collect and distribute new and good-condition used iPods and iTunes gift cards – which will be sent to men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces eager to receive them.

Kelsey and Mike believe it is important to show our appreciation for the men and women who serve our Country with great distinction. Many members of our military forces have served extended tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq and make great sacrifices to defend the freedom and liberties that we all enjoy as Americans. Providing them with some of the same comforts of home that we all cherish will make their time away from their families a little easier.

According to Soldiers’ Angels Founder – Patti Patton-Bader, “Soldiers’ Angels receive many requests for these items – more than they can currently provide with the funds that they have available.”

Chaplain Dickerson, the liaison for wounded soldiers returning from Afghanistan has expressed strong support for this project and believes that these donated items will provide comfort to the wounded soldiers returning home from Afghanistan. They get many requests for Apple iPods. All new iPods donated will go exclusively to wounded soldiers. Good, working-condition iPods will be sent to troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan to those that do not have these items and have requested them.

With the introduction of the new Apple iPods this month, Kelsey believes that many people may be considering acquiring new ones but have good working iPods that can be put to good use. “People can donate their iPods, accessories and iTunes Gift Cards and know that they are helping put a smile on the faces of our brave heroes. “ Kelsey will provide a written and recorded message to each recipient of a donated iPod and iTunes Gift Card which will let them know how much we all appreciate the dedication and sacrifices they make for all of us.

Kelsey and Mike hope that the public will generously contribute to this effort. Interested individuals and businesses can make arrangements for the pickup of these items by either e-mailing Kelsey and Mike at ctlca24@gmail.com, or calling 818-355-2570. Donations made to Soldiers’ Angels may be tax deductible.

About Soldiers’ Angels:

On a Wing and a Prayer

On a Wing and a Prayer Soldiers’ Angels Helps Support Our Troops and their Families With Emergency Airplane Flights

A wounded American soldier lies in a bed in a military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany. He is post-op, in intensive care, and holding on to his life. He is literally across an ocean and thousands of miles from home. The military rushes his mother and father to his side. His grandmother wants to see her grandson and support her daughter but the family does not have the money for the last minute airfare. Military regulations prevent the Army from paying for her flight. She calls Soldiers’ Angels, a military support charity. A ticket is purchased for her through the use of donated air miles and she is on her way to Germany on the next flight. She is able to comfort her daughter and hug her grandson. A family who has given more than they can realize to their country is united at a time of need.

Back in the United States a soldier sits in her room at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC. She suffered many wounds in an IED attack. She is working her way through physical therapy, depressed and wondering if she even wants to continue living. She receives an offer for a free weekend trip at a vacation spa in California. She wants to go, she needs to go, but she cannot afford the airfare. She calls Soldiers’ Angels and she is connected to a volunteer who has donated air miles. Her plane ticket is purchased and she begins to feel like her old self again.

A soldier returns to his home base from Afghanistan. He is stationed on the west coast and learns that his mother lies in a hospital in Ohio dying from cancer. The doctors give her a few days at the most. He simply does not have the money to purchase a plane ticket and a bus ride will not get him home in time. He calls Soldiers’ Angels and the next morning he is on a plane. He arrives at the hospital and is able to spend that last few hours of his mother's life holding her hand.

These stories do not scratch the surface of the help provided by the American people through Soldiers' Angels Air Miles Donation Program. Soldiers' Angels receives request for flights on a daily basis, whether it is a soldier trying to get home because of a death or seriously injured family member, a family member trying to get to the bedside of a wounded warrior, or even a family member trying to get to a memorial service of a hero who has given his life for our country. Unfortunately, the requests always seem to outnumber the available air miles.

When emergencies arise, such as those described above, the donation of air miles is used to help get our troops and families to their destinations as quickly as possible. The donor maintains control of the air miles, but is contacted by a Soldiers' Angel when the need arises. Soldiers' Angels then works with the donor to get the flights scheduled. The aid and comfort brought by the donation of a few air miles is incalculable.

In the summer of 2003, Patti Patton-Bader was inspired to found Soldiers' Angels when her son wrote home from Iraq expressing his concern that some soldiers did not receive any mail or support from home. Within a few short months Soldiers' Angels had grown from a mother writing a few extra letters to an Internet Community with tens of thousands of angels worldwide. Continuing the time honored tradition of civilian support of American soldiers, Soldiers' Angels sponsors programs which provide support to American soldiers and their families. Soldiers' Angels' programs include first responder packs, support and laptop computers to wounded soldiers who are receiving treatment at American military hospitals; care packages, letters, and support to deployed soldiers; providing emergency flights with donated air miles; armored blankets to military ambulances; items shipped for deployed soldiers to give children in war zones; and memorial trees for the families of soldiers who have died in the service of their country.

If you would like more information about this topic or to schedule an interview with Patti Patton-Bader, please call her at (615) 676-0239, email soldiersangels@gmail.com or check out the website at www.soldiersangels.org.

Book Review - May No Soldier Go Unloved

By Thomas Longo, published at World Voice News

Soldiers' Angels-"May No Soldier Go Unloved" is such a book.

When I first picked up this book I had no idea what was in store for me. I knew generally that it was about a volunteer organization that helped out soldiers in the field. As a political writer, who was disgusted at the attempt of the Democrat party to pull funding from the troops, I looked forward to it. I had no idea how quickly it would strip away all hint of ideology and preconception.

By the time I was ten pages into this book I had forgotten all about political squabbles. By the time I was thirteen pages into this book, I was crying like a baby. Without a doubt, this book makes one thing crystal clear. Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, whether you oppose the war or support it, the soldiers who fight in foreign lands on our behalf do believe in their mission. If we do not support them and if we do not go the extra mile to help them to complete their mission, then we are not Americans at all.

It's true that most of the soldiers in Iraq believe in the cause that they fight for, but that's not the mission I speak of. I speak of each and every soldier's drive to do their part and return home safely. I speak of the mission of each member of the military to keep their family back home safe and provided for. In this, I speak of the personal mission of each soldier. This is something that Patti Patton Bader has hit upon, and it's not surprising that her epiphany and everything that followed became a national movement.

As one reads Soldiers' Angels-"May No Soldier Go Unloved," the deep emotion caused by the speed of a single idea, that spreads into a power to move mountains, is overwhelming. It is difficult to believe that such just happen. Certainly, the snowball effect as one mother's courage and commitment spread to those around her and mushroom into a national campaign to help soldiers in the field, must be the result of divine intervention.

In many ways, Soldiers' Angels-"May No Soldier Go Unloved" is more than just the story of one woman's fight to help her son in a foreign land. It's more than a chronicle of how sending a few boxes of cookies metamorphed into airlifts of goods on the grand scale. It is a demonstration, once again, that the actions of one person can have a dramatic effect in the world we live in.

Many of the pages of Soldiers' Angels-"May No Soldier Go Unloved" are devoted to letters back home from the soldiers who are receiving the largess of their adopted "angels." Of course, the heartfelt thanks is moving, but no less so than the desire to tell the anonymous donors about the things that they are doing and explain how their selfless gifts helped to make life in an unbearable place, more bearable.

There are letters of commendation from officers in all branches of the service, but none of the letters reproduced in Soldiers' Angels-"May No Soldier Go Unloved" are as moving and as heartfelt as the letters of those relatives of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

A book of this kind defies a traditional review, and cries out for something more. In the process of requesting a review copy of Soldiers' Angels-"May No Soldier Go Unloved," I received a copy of an email from Patti to Jeff Bader by accident. She had seen my request and wrote a quick note to Jeff to tell him that she thought my request was "important."

How unimportant I am cannot be more evident. I can write this review, and I can do everything I know how to do to publicize Soldiers' Angels, and get the word out about the good work that they are doing, but it can never be anything but laughably insignificant when compared to the mountains moved by one woman with faith and a will.

I'm not important, Patti. This review is not important. What you are doing and what Soldiers' Angels is doing.

These things are the very definition of important.

Soldiers' Angels-"May No Soldier Go Unloved" is something else too, it's a paean of love and admiration from a husband to his wife-a validation of an effort well undertaken and a life well lived. I cannot recommend enough that you buy and read Soldiers' Angels-"May No Soldier Go Unloved," nor can I encourage you to become involved with the organization with more enthusiasm.

Please, visit the Soldiers' Angels organization at their web site.

Soldiers' Angels Supports the 2007 America Supports You Freedom Walk and Invites

July 5th, 2007, Pasadena, CA- In 2005, Pentagon employees created The America Supports You Freedom Walk to commemorate the attack on the Pentagon and honor all lives lost on September 11. What began as a small gesture has become a new national tradition. Last year, over 135 Freedom Walks of all types and sizes were held across the U.S. to honor the victims of September 11, reflect on the freedoms we have in America, and pay tribute to our veterans, past and present. The National Freedom Walk will be held in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, September 9, 2007, at 9:00 a.m.

Local Freedom Walks will be held across America from September 8-11 in cities, workplaces and schools. Anyone is welcome to host or organize a Freedom Walk, or participate in a walk in their local community. Soldiers' Angels across America are stepping up to volunteer to host walks and volunteer in scheduled events.

FREEDOM WALKS come in many different shapes and sizes. The San Diego, CA walk had an “open course”. People chose a time to walk from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. that worked best with their schedules. In St. Louis, MO all walkers wore yellow t-shirts and formed a “human yellow ribbon” on the Anheuser-Busch Center field. The present Governor and the former Governor of Oklahoma co-chaired the FREEDOM WALK in Oklahoma City attended by over 5,000 people. In Sebring, OH, 9-year-old Colton Lockner organized a FREEDOM WALK for the town’s nearly 3,000 residents with the support of his Mayor and sponsorship for t-shirts from his local Pizza Pan. The College Gate Elementary School in Anchorage, AL walked around their school five times and concluded the event by writing essays on what freedom meant to each of them.

About America Supports You - America Supports You is a Department of Defense program recognizing citizens' support for our military and communicating that support to members of our Armed Forces and their families, at home and abroad. America Supports You connects citizens and corporations who are looking for ways to support the military with home front organizations that are devoted to helping the troops and their families, while also providing a one stop location on the internet www.AmericaSupportsYou.mil where our military and their families can find hundreds of support organizations eager to help our heroes when they need it most.

Soldiers' Angels has been supporting our nation's military men and women since 2003. Their mission is to ensure that no soldier feels unloved. They provide aid and comfort to the military and its families, which may include immediate response to hardship situations. Soldiers' Angels is an all-volunteer, 501I(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the support of the brave men and women deployed in support of the War on Terror in Iraq, Afghanistan and wherever we fly the flag of the United States of America. There are several ways to support our troops through Soldiers' Angels such as register to adopt a soldier, organize a sewing, knitting or baking group, assist with fund raising or a variety of other ways to support the troops that can be found on the national website www.soldiersangels.org.
